★★★★ – Little White Lies

Babak Jalali’s Jarmuschian black and white drama tells the story of Donya (an astonishing performance from newcomer Anaita Wali Zada), an Afghan woman who was a former translator for US troops before fleeing Kabul once the Taliban came back into power.

Her new life in California consists of long sleepless nights wracked with survivor’s guilt in her apartment block which houses other refugees, and days spent working in a fortune cookie factory.

In a moment of inspiration, she decides to send a message out to the world, and perhaps some relief will appear in the form of hunky Daniel (Jeremy Allen White, The Bear).
