Brooklyn teenager Chantel (played with naturalistic verve by Ariyan A Johnson) dreams of becoming a doctor – which she sees as a route out from the life her working class parents lead in their housing projects home.
Like Boyz N The Hood the previous year, Harris realistically considers the tough choices faced by teenage African-Americans of the period, this time with a female focus.
