Mira Nair’s inspiring film follows Phiona, a young girl from Katwe in the slums of Kampala whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to chess by a kindly local coach.
As she rises through local and international tournaments Phiona becomes determined to succeed so she can get her family out of Katwe.
This year the British Chess Championships are being held at De Montfort University with events running Thu 20 – Sun 30 Jul. To mark the tournament's visit to Leicester we present Checkmate, a mini-season of chess related films.
There'll be drop-in chess games running at Phoenix before this screening.
