Among the lush and green Welsh countryside, nestles the inherited home of Glenda (Nia Roberts), her politician husband Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) and their two sons. Preparations for the evening’s dinner party are underway, with assistance from Cadi (Annes Elwy) - a local girl from the village whom Glenda has employed as help for the evening.
The lavish feast is put on to bring together their farmer neighbours, Mair and Lori with a businessman who has been drilling their land for the rich natural reserves of oil dwelling below. Mair attends alone as Lori is held up as a car has driven into a local pond and he is helping with the rescue. The propositions concerned Mair - folklore in the area demands the land around ‘the Rise’ must not be touched, which Glenda is well aware of.
The frantic fussing around the particulars of the evening have left Cadi largely unnoticed, aside from the dishevelled state in which she arrives, her fervent reactions to the family’s lifestyle seem invisible to everyone. She observes with a chilling sense of judgement, though the reasons reveal themselves in a blaze of horror once tension has been built to breaking point.
