After her husband's death at the south-eastern border, the widowed Duyen conceals the truth to spare her ailing father-in-law.


With the help of a Khang, a teacher who saves her after she falls into a river, she maintains the illusion of her husband's survival. But as her father-in-law's health declines, he urges Duyen to send him a telegram to bring his son home.
